Management and treatment of accidents and trauma-related orthopaedic injuries

“You can take just a few more minutes actually to spend listening to the patient and understanding what is different about their particular situation. It doesn’t take that much extra time, but it just takes the difference between truly caring.”

Patients First

Dr. Brian D. Miller grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin, and lived there until he moved to Phoenix, Arizona, to complete his medical internship at the Maricopa Medical Center. Although he had traveled a fair amount, living in a cultural melting pot after a lifetime in Wisconsin proved to be as much of an education as his academic studies.

Interacting with a spectrum of people and treating a variety of conditions are what drew Dr. Miller to emergency medicine. “You didn’t know what was coming in,” he explains. “You couldn’t predict your schedule. You didn’t know if a baby was going to be in front of you or a 90-year-old. Yet each patient was a unique individual, and you had to be able to rise to that opportunity and treat each person with the same level of knowledge, the same acuity, and provide the same care.” This internship rooted in Dr. Miller the philosophical foundation that he continues to practice to this day.

Dr. Miller enjoys the intersection of emergency medicine and urgent care—being able to quickly provide relief to patients and impact their lives while having enough time to get to know them. “You can truly listen to patients and understand what is a little bit different about their particular clinical situations,” he says. “And you can help them so that they can leave not just as satisfied patients, but also feeling better as patients—like they had a good interaction with you.”

For Dr. Miller, his vocation and avocation are one and the same. He simply loves medicine and can’t get enough, even after hours. “When looking through news sites, I’ll always go right to the health news,” he says. “I’m just fascinated to uncover the latest and greatest on any subject, whether it be multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, musculoskeletal disorders, or cardiac conditions.” He reads the latest literature and researches the best treatment plans. “I ask myself, ‘How could a practitioner such as myself or a facility implement these best practices so that it’s not just in a laboratory setting?’”

Dr. Miller is excited about working at UNOVA not only because it aligns with his medical interests, but also with his philosophy of treating each patient as an individual. “I pride myself on trying to listen well and understand the patient in addition to not being quick to judge, being very open-minded, and truly believing there are many ways to solve a problem that are unique to each patient,” he says. “I truly believe in providing compassionate care to patients, being respectful, and hoping at the end of the day that patients feel I’ve given my best.”

Dr. Miller lives locally in The Villages with his daughter and gentle Gentle Dane.  After growing up in chilly Wisconsin, he enjoys spending time outdoors in the Florida sunshine biking, swimming, golfing, and of course, walking as much as possible with his daughter and dog.
