Disorders and injuries of the foot and ankle, including surgery and minimally invasive treatments

Cedric J. Tankson, M.D.

Consistently Caring

Ever since he was a boy, Dr. Cedric Tankson possessed a consistent desire to help people. “I first wanted to be a fireman,” he remembers. “Then I thought I wanted to be a paramedic because you got to help people, but a little bit farther away from the fire.” In the third grade, at the ripe old age of eight, he settled on being doctor and dressed up as one for his elementary school’s career day. Dr. Tankson has been wearing a white coat for almost 20 years now, and he remains just as passionate about his profession as the day he made his career choice.

Why orthopedics? “It’s very functional in nature,” he explains. Unlike specialties where physicians may have little control over a patient’s compliance with his or her treatment plan—for example, treating a heart patient who stubbornly continues to smoke a pack of cigarettes each day, orthopaedics offers more predictable results when practiced correctly. “It fits my personality. You have a problem; we address the problem. You do a good job; the patient does better. That part of it makes me happy—that I have the ability to affect someone’s life in a positive way.”

Dr. Tankson is grateful to work in a profession he feels passionate about and to practice orthopaedics at UNOVA where his colleagues share this passion. “We cherish what we do. We take it seriously, and we routinely care about the patients getting better,” he says. Building relationships with patients is important to him, and it starts with communication. “No question is too silly; no question is too small,” he affirms. “I have a family just like my patients. So if their teenage son comes in with a broken hand from doing something silly—you know, I have a teenage son, too.”

On this note, Dr. Tankson enjoys being a community doctor and feels that being part of such a tight-knit community makes him even more accountable to excel as a physician. “When you’re seeing patients for years, you’re also seeing their kids and sometimes their grandkids,” he says. “That is rewarding.” Running into patients in the park or the grocery store is always a pleasant surprise.

This attitude of service goes beyond Dr. Tankson’s work as a physician. “My purpose is to try to affect change in a positive way. Not only at work, but outside work.” He and several other UNOVA physicians mentor boys in the community to help them prepare for college.

Dr. Tankson lives in Leesberg and enjoys spending time with his wife and their four children. He is also working on his pilot’s license, an interesting goal for someone whose feet and principles are so firmly rooted.
